What Sets the Price of Ukraine Insurance, and What Does Not?

How the days, the plan and the number of travellers move a Ukraine insurance quote, which details leave it where it is, and how to check a quote before you pay.

Asking what Ukraine insurance costs gets you one number. The better question is what determines the price of your own quote: which of your choices move it, and which details leave it exactly where it is. Three choices move it; several things you might expect to matter do not.

Three of your choices set the price: the number of days between the policy's start and end dates, the plan, and how many people travel. Basic starts at €3.56 and Extended at €5.75 for 3 days, per person. Your purchase date, nationality and destination in Ukraine are not price inputs, so quote your real dates and party.

Key points

  • The days, the plan and the number of travellers set the price of a quote.
  • Basic costs €3.56 for 3 days plus €1.08 for each extra day, per person.
  • Extended costs €5.75 for 3 days plus €1.73 for each extra day, per person.
  • The purchase date, your nationality, your destination and the purpose of the trip are not price inputs.

Which of your choices change the price?

Each of the three inputs moves a quote in a fixed, predictable way.

  • The days: a policy runs for 3 to 180 days, priced as a 3-day starting price plus a per-day rate for every day after the third.
  • The plan: Basic or Extended, each with its own starting price and per-day rate; Extended costs more for the same dates.
  • The travellers: the price is per insured person, so each traveller adds a price of their own.

Add a day and the price rises by one per-day rate; add a traveller and it rises by one person's price.

How do your travel dates set the price?

Your dates set the price through the policy term: the first 3 days are priced together, and every day after that adds the plan's per-day rate.

  • Policy term: the days between the start and end dates printed on the policy, at least 3 and at most 180.
  • Starting price: the price of a 3-day policy, €3.56 on Basic and €5.75 on Extended; it is not a daily rate.
  • Extra day: each day after the third, at €1.08 on Basic or €1.73 on Extended, per person.

Take, for example, a British couple planning several five-day business trips to Zhytomyr over one autumn. Each five-day trip is priced as the 3-day starting price plus two extra days, for each of them.

  • A policy for each trip: priced for that trip's days only.
  • One policy for the whole autumn: priced for every day of its term, the weeks at home between trips included.

Whichever you choose, the start and end dates are printed on the policy, so choose dates that cover the whole stay.

How does the plan you pick change the price?

Extended costs more than Basic for the same dates and carries the higher sum insured, the most the policy pays per insured person.

  • Basic: €2,000 cover, €3.56 for 3 days, plus €1.08 per extra day.
  • Extended: €30,000 cover, €5.75 for 3 days, plus €1.73 per extra day.

Written in full, Basic's sum insured is 100,000 UAH (≈ €2,000), and Extended's is €30,000.

The visa rules approved by Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolution No. 118 of 1 March 2017 narrow the plan choice for a visa file: paragraph 5(4) lists a valid medical insurance policy covering at least €30,000 among the documents for every type of visa, unless a law or an international treaty of Ukraine provides otherwise, as of October 2026.

Basic covers 100,000 UAH (≈ €2,000), which is below that threshold, so choose Extended if the policy is for a visa file. Holders of diplomatic or service passports are not asked for the policy at all. The foreign ministry's guidance for visa applicants lists the policy the same way, as cover for Ukraine and the period of stay with a minimum of €30,000 or equivalent coverage.

Our page on insurance for a visa application covers that case in more detail.

How does the number of travellers change it?

The price is calculated per insured person, so each traveller adds a full price of their own for the same dates and plan.

  • One traveller: one person's price for the chosen days and plan.
  • Two travellers: two people's prices, so the couple in the example pays twice the single price for each trip.

The price formula has no discount and no surcharge for travelling together.

What does not change the price?

The price formula is built on the days, the plan and the number of travellers; it has no input for any of the details below.

  • The day you buy: with the same dates, plan and party, a quote made weeks ahead and one made close to departure use the same figures, as long as the prices themselves stay the same.
  • Your nationality: the formula has no nationality factor.
  • Where in Ukraine you go: the city you visit is not a price input.
  • Why you travel: a business trip, a holiday and a family visit are priced the same way.
  • A deductible: the policy has none, so there is no excess to trade against a lower price.

That makes a quote easier to predict: none of these details moves it.

What do the words on a quote mean?

Three more terms are worth knowing before you read a quote.

  • Sum insured: the most the policy pays per insured person, 100,000 UAH (≈ €2,000) on Basic and €30,000 on Extended.
  • Per person: the basis of every price; each insured traveller has a price of their own.
  • Deductible: the part of a claim you pay yourself; this policy has none.

How do you check a quote before you pay?

A quote is ready to pay when its dates, plan and travellers match your trip.

  • Dates: choose start and end dates that cover the whole stay.
  • Plan: choose Extended if the policy is for a visa file.
  • Currency: the card is charged in hryvnia, and the euro figure shown before checkout is an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a summer trip cost more than a winter one?

No. The published price formula has no input for the season or the month of travel, so the same number of days on the same plan costs the same per person in summer and in winter, as long as the published prices stay the same.

What comes with Extended's higher price?

The higher sum insured: €30,000 on Extended, against 100,000 UAH (≈ €2,000) on Basic. The sum insured is the most the policy pays per insured person. For the same dates, Extended costs €5.75 for 3 days and €1.73 for each extra day, per person.

Is the euro figure on my quote what my card is charged?

Not exactly. The card is charged in hryvnia, and a euro amount shown before checkout is an estimate at the day's rate. Treat the euro price on a quote as a guide to the cost of your policy, not as the amount charged.
