What travel health insurance for Ukraine covers
A compliant policy pays for emergency medical care while you are in Ukraine — both inpatient and outpatient treatment, including for COVID-19. Cover typically includes hospital stays (standard wards, intensive care and resuscitation), doctor call-outs and ambulance transport, prescribed medication, emergency dental treatment and emergency obstetric care up to around the 29th week of pregnancy. It also covers medical transport, emergency evacuation and repatriation to your home country, including repatriation of remains. Higher tiers add a 24/7 multilingual assistance line that coordinates your treatment and billing.
Basic vs extended cover
Two levels are available. Basic cover provides around 100,000 UAH (roughly €2,300) of medical expenses — enough for short, low-risk visits. Extended cover raises the limit to €30,000 and adds passive war-risk protection, which is why most travellers to Ukraine choose it today. Both can be issued for 3 to 180 days. An optional radiation extension increases the relevant limit by about 3.5× for radiation-related emergencies. Pick Basic for a quick, routine trip and Extended if you want the higher limit and war-risk protection.
War-risk and special situations
Standard travel policies worldwide exclude war and armed conflict. For Ukraine, the extended plan adds passive war-risk cover — it pays for unintentional injuries caused by military events during your trip. It does not cover active participation in hostilities, and it is not a substitute for following official safety guidance. Given current conditions, the extended plan with war-risk is the recommended choice for almost everyone travelling to Ukraine.
Who needs insurance for Ukraine
Health insurance is required for most foreign visitors entering Ukraine, and border officers can ask to see it. It suits tourists, business travellers, volunteers and humanitarian staff, students, relocating professionals (expats) and digital nomads. Under Ukrainian law it is specifically required for visiting journalists, media crews and similar visitors. If you are applying for a visa or a residence permit, a valid medical policy is also part of the document set.
How much it costs
Insurance for Ukraine is inexpensive and priced per day, so you only pay for the days you travel. Basic cover starts at €3.30 for three days and adds about €1.00 for each extra day. Extended cover (with war-risk) starts at €5.32 for three days and adds about €1.60 per extra day. A typical policy costs somewhere between €5 and €65 depending on the length of your stay and the plan you choose.
How long the policy lasts
Policies are issued for 3 to 180 days. Set the start and end dates to match your trip — cover begins on your chosen start date and runs to the end date across the whole territory of Ukraine. For stays longer than 180 days, or for study, work or residence, buy a new policy for the next period so your cover continues without a gap; this is how students and permit-holders keep continuous cover.
Buying your policy online
The whole process takes a few minutes. Fill in a short form with your travel dates and passport details, choose Basic or Extended cover, and pay securely by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay over an encrypted connection. Your policy is emailed as a PDF within about five minutes. You can keep it on your phone or print it — both digital and printed copies are accepted.
At the Ukrainian border
Keep your policy PDF easy to reach when you arrive. Border officials may ask to see proof of valid medical insurance covering your stay, so have the document — or its policy number — ready alongside your passport and visa. The policy is issued by a Ukraine-licensed insurer and is accepted at Ukrainian border checkpoints nationwide.
Using your policy and making a claim
If you need medical care, call the 24/7 assistance number on your policy before treatment where possible — the team will direct you to a suitable clinic or hospital and coordinate payment. Keep all medical reports, prescriptions and receipts. For planned or smaller costs you may pay and claim reimbursement afterwards by submitting your documents. Our support team can guide you through every step.
Refunds and changes
Plans change, so a refund is available if you cancel up to three days before the policy start date. After the insured period has begun, premiums are generally non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. See the refund policy for the full conditions, and contact support if your dates change before departure.
Who issues the insurance
Policies are underwritten by IC EUROINS UKRAINE, an established insurer licensed and regulated by the National Bank of Ukraine. That means you are buying real, regulated cover that Ukrainian hospitals and border officials recognise — not an informal arrangement. Every policy comes with a unique number and a downloadable contract you can verify.
